Do you have a portable E-Jisho that you use? I managed to find a English-Japanese dictionary for the DS (sonomama rakubiki jiten) that has pretty good stroke recognition. Nice recommendation!

I agree about the dictionaries becoming a crutch. I installed it mainly because I've been finding a lot of kanji incorporated into people's blogs.
